Biography

Budzanani is Director, Science and Technology/Capacity Development at The Southern Africa Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL), a joint initiative of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Germany in response to challenges of global climate change. He is the founding Director (executive), Innovation and Technology at the Botswana Digital and Innovation Hub (BDIH), where his portfolio responsibilities included research and technology funding and commercialization. He previously held positions of, Research Fellow at the University of Botswana (Okavango Research Institute), Regional Coordinator-Southern Africa, Global Monitoring for Food Security Consortium led by Flemish Institute of Technology (VITO); and interim Coordinator in the Botswana Innovation Hub Project Office, among others. He has more than 20 cumulative years’ experience in academia (Research and Development), industry (products development), and government (science, technology, & innovation policy and Science and Technology Parks operationalization). Served as a non-executive director in the Medical Education Partnership Initiative Advisory Board and the Botswana Geoscience Institute. Currently sits on Botswana Postal Services Limited Board and is Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee. He is the founding Chairman of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) Physics and Astronomy departmental Advisory Board. He is a review panellist for the National Research Foundation’s African Union-Flagship projects. Editor of “The Science, Technology and Innovation Policymaking; its trends and objectives in developing countries”. A Harvard Executive Education alumnus.

Sylvia Thompson is the Spatial Analyst at SASSCAL’s Open Access Data Centre, where she supports a team that creates data products and services for decision makers. She has 25 years’ of experience in GIS and Remote Sensing, in Water Resources, Agriculture, Fisheries, Conservation, Climate Change and Academics.

Biography

Dzikamayi Tanaka Nyatoro holds a Master’s Degree in Biology: Specilaisation Human Ecology from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium obtained 2013 and completed his Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in Biology with the Midlands State University, Gweru, Zimbabwe in 2009. He has about ten years of professional experience in the international research and sustainable development sector; with emphasis on environmental impact assessments, climate change, land use management & monitoring, developing, and reviewing biotechnological policies, training staff, and database management systems. Dzikamayi Tanaka Nyatoro has previous experience working as a research officer under the Southern Africa Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land management (SASSCAL) Project for task 059 (Plant and vegetation databases of the National Botanic Research Institute, Namibia) and task 060 (Establish and improve baseline inventories for spatial data on biodiversity). He carried out climate change vulnerability assessments, fostering climate change resilience/mitigation in diverse ecosystems and the need for adaptation planning via the application of the precautionary principle.

Biography

Baptista Joao is a technologist with a passion for developing tech solutions that contribute towards the addressing of environment, social, governance, and business challenges. Prior to joining SASSCAL as a software development officer in 2019, Baptista led and participated in the development of medium to enterprise-large solutions in fintech, health informatics, and telco industries for clients in Angola, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia. He holds a Honours Degree in Computer Science from the Namibia University of Science and Technology and currently coordinates the activities of the Open Access Data Centre at SASSCAL.

Biography

Mr Santos is based at the Regional Secretariat in Windhoek, and he is the SASSCAL Software developer. He has over 8 years of experience in software development. Prior to joining SASSCAL Albano was with the National Institute of Statistics of Angola where he served in various positions from website management, IT Analyst and IT Support as well as development of web GIS systems. Albano holds an Honours degree in Computer Science from Neto University. He also has Advanced Certification in Methods and Techniques of Spatial Analysis, Spatial Databases and ArcGIS Desktop-Web from the University Nova Lisboa (Nova IMS) – Lisbon / Portugal. He has been actively involved in the WeMAST Phase I for the infrastructure set up and development and pilot testing of the geoportal. Mr. Albano holds a Certificate in Ethical Hacking & Information Security level 7 from NUST (Namibia University of Science and Technologies)
