🌍💧 Empowering Water Resources Management Specialists in Southern Africa! 💧🌍

The SASSCAL Graduate Studies Programme in Integrated Water Resources Management (SGSP-IWRM) recently hosted a capacity enhancement Short Course on Water Quality Management and Effluent Treatment from 19–23 May 2025 at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).

 

Facilitated by the esteemed Prof. Collins Ateba, a Microbiology expert from the University of Mpumalanga, South Africa.

 

The course provided a hands-on, case study-driven learning experience, involving lecture sessions, group discussions, and real-world applications.

 

🌍 Participants from the five SASSCAL countries of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia engaged in a week of collaborative learning which focused on:
✔️ Water pollution prevention
✔️ Sustainable water resource management
✔️ Effective effluent treatment strategies
✔️ Environmental compliance and governance

 

This initiative is a key step towards building regional capacity for enhanced water stewardship and environmental sustainability. 💡

 

The short course concluded with a practical field visit to the Gammams Wastewater Treatment Plant and the WINGOC Water Reclamation Plant. These site visits offered participants a valuable opportunity to observe first-hand the real-world implementation of effluent treatment processes and water quality management strategies explored during the course.

The objective of the SGSP – IWRM is the development and deployment of an innovative and excellent regional collaborative education and research programme at PhD degree level complemented by selected tailor-made short courses for decision makers and industry, as well as a curriculum for a new regional PhD qualification in IWRM.
